The Cowardly Sailor

The Cowardly Sailor

By Michael Brookbank

I watched as a man was taken away

Devoured by the cold, black Sea

Surely there was nothing to be done

He was such a better sailor than me

And it is fear that holds me here

The reason I stand and watch him scream

For I, myself, have never seen such a storm

Even in the worst of my dreams

If only I’d reached out my hands to him

I would’ve revived the breath from his body

Reminded him what warmth is

But the Sea never shows mercy

And now he is a part of it

So I’ll stay far away

I won’t be dragged down with him

I never want to go astray

So Captain won’t you save him?

Throw out your line?

Save his life...

Before I lose mine.
